Truly, one of the most xeric plants in North America. This bright native cactus blooms yellow in early summer atop flat green stems covered in rusty red spines. Plains prickly pear is ideal for the rock garden or unirrigated hot, dry sites where nothing else will grow. The decorative fruit with the skin and seeds removed can be eaten raw or made into candy.
