Aralia cordata 'Sun King'/ Golden Japanese Spikenard
Looking for something uniquely different for shade? Try this tropical-looking golden leaved cultivar with large compound leaves topped with two foot tall spikes of tiny white flowers that are attractive to bees. Purple-black inedible berries ripen in autumn that can feed the birds.
Woodland perennials are good companions to ‘Sun King’ as it emerges mid-spring with bright gold leaves held on nicely contrasting reddish brown stems. If given at least a few hours of sun a day, the foliage will remain yellow all summer. In heavier shade, the foliage ranges from chartreuse to lime green.
